Glass Collaborations

I have always been interested in combining materials and collaborating with other artists because there is such a different dynamic.

The glass and stone series made with Neil Homstead was theoretically impossible because those materials are so different, but we thought why not try?

The Undersea series with Joyce Roessler was fun because so many people already thought Planets looked aquatic.

Jewelry with Carla Caruso was a challenge of scale for me - because my work is typically much larger. I learned a lot from Carla's way of looking at the world and her sense of design.

I worked with Harry and Wendy Besett  to create more surreal painted objects.

The most recent collaborative is with John Chiles. John and I have been friends for years. We also have a long history of pulling semi-evil practical jokes on one another. One of the best was when John put up a very official sign in my exhibit space at a well known craft fair stating that Josh Simpson Contemporary Glass was a wholly owned subsidiary of John Chiles HUB Glass Inc. The best/worst part was that I did not see the sign for two days and could not understand why so many collectors stopped to ask why I had sold my studio.

I like sharing my vision with another artist - there is no way of knowing the outcome ahead of time. The unpredictability and surprise keep me engaged.
